Lamar State College-Port Arthur made a quick statement but Wallace State-Hanceville (Alabama) got the final word as the Lions took a 4-2 win in extra innings at Martin Field on Monday afternoon.
Weather shortened Monday’s doubleheader to a single game, and it appeared the Seahawks would dominate from the first pitch.
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman Kayla Sheridan singled to left field, stole second and reached third on a passed ball. Rebecca Hernandez then reached after being hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners.
Seahawks freshman Alexis Perez singled to centerfield to plate Sheridan. Then, with two outs, freshman McKenzie Andrus picked up the run batted in with a single to score Hernandez.
The score stood at 2-0 in favor of the Hawks until the fifth, when Wallace State put two on the board to knot the game.
LSC-PA managed to get base runners in scoring position again in the late innings but was unable to push anyone across, sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Wallace State scored two to take the 4-2 lead. LSC-PA couldn’t respond, dropping its overall record to 1-6 for the season.
Perez finished 2 for 4 for the day, while Andrus was 2 for 3 with a double. Brooke Wilhelm was 1 for 3 and Sheridan, Sierra Miller and Breyn Pulcher were each 1 for 4 with the Hawks collecting eight hits.
Angelica Rogers got the decision on the hill for the Seahawks, allowing one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
The Seahawks get another chance to mark the win column today when they face Bossier Parish Community College of Louisiana in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Martin Field. BPCC returns Wednesday for another two-game set with a noon first pitch at Martin Field.
