The distance between Lamar State College Port Arthur and the rest of the pack widened just a little bit more Wednesday night as the Seahawks dominated Jacksonville College for an 82-65 NJCAA Region 14 win at the Carl Parker Center.
That victory, coupled with a loss to Angelina College by San Jacinto College, puts the Seahawks in control of their own conference fate as they head into the final three games of the regular season. The Hawks, 20-8 overall and 11-5 in league play, face San Jacinto this Saturday at 4 p.m. in Pasadena. Having already beaten the Ravens in Port Arthur, and with Wednesday night’s loss by San Jac to Angelina, the Seahawks can take a huge step toward claiming a South Zone title in the next week and a half.
That road, though, will go through Blinn College, which beat the Hawks 80-75 in Brenham on Jan. 30. The final game of the regular season won’t be much easier for the Hawks as the surging Angelina Roadrunners host LSCPA on Saturday, February 27.
On Wednesday night, there was no doubt which team was in first place in the South Zone as the Seahawks dominated from tip to final buzzer against the Jaguars. It was LSCPA’s stifling defense early that set the pace and gave the Blue and White an advantage that the Jaguars just couldn’t overcome.
The Seahawks took a 12-11 lead on a Mambi Diawara 3-pointer with 13:49 left in the first half and Angelina would never regain an advantage. Diawara and Freddie Williams Jr. led the Seahawks offense in the first half, pushing LSCPA out to a 37-24 advantage at the break. On defense, Williams and Christian Albright controlled the tempo.
Through the second half, the tenacious Seahawks D forced poor shots from the field by Jacksonville, which finished the game with a 32.3 percent shooting mark.
Williams had his third consecutive all-star game, scoring 25 points with 10 rebounds, while Diawara added 18 points, seven boards and six assists. Albright picked up his first double-double performance of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Nederland sophomore Colton Weisbrod added 15 points.
Jacksonville had no players in double-figures though 12 of the team’s 15 players scored at least two points.
