Tuesday brought some very welcomed news to the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks.
LSC-PA was awarded a 2-0 victory over San Jacinto College after the Ravens forfeited a 92-76 victory Saturday. San Jac had a player pick up two technical fouls and then not leave the bench.
The Ravens (20-8, 12-5) forfeit gives the Seahawks a two-game lead in the Region XIV South over Lee College (18-10, 10-7) and San Jac (19-9, 10-7) heading into tonight’s 7 p.m. game against Blinn College (20-8, 9-8). LSC-PA has clinched the South Zone championship and can secure the No. 2 overall seed in the conference tournament with a win in its last two games. The Seahawks will have a first-round by in the Region XIV Tournament, held March 1-5 at Angelina College in Lufkin.
Blinn defeated LSC-PA 80-75 on Jan. 30. It is now the last loss LSC-PA suffered, thanks to the San Jac forfeit.
LSC-PA coach Lance Madison did not seem worried about the league standings on Tuesday. All he cared about was the team’s next game.
“We are still taking it one game at a time,” Madison said. “Blinn beat us the first time we played them and they are a good team. They will come in focused. We have to stop them in transition and have to keep them off the glass.”
Jordon Harris scored 26 points to go with seven boards in the first game against the Ravens while Nederland graduate Colton Weisbrod was held to 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Weisbrod is fourth in the conference at 21 points per game and Harris is fifth at 18.7 a contest.
Blinn scores 95 points a game, second best in Region XIV and LSC-PA is seventh at 84.1 a game. The Seahawks counter with the league’s third best defense by giving up 54.3 points a contest and the Ravens average 54.8 points allowed.
Blinn guard Morris Dunnigan is the conference-leading score at 23.8 points a game and teammate Link Kabadyundi leads Region XIV with 11.1 boards a contest.
“We know their personnel so we have to stick to the scouting report,” Madison said. “It is going to be an emotional night being Sophomore Night. We have eight sophomores. Hopefully, we can stay focused and not let that be a distraction.”
