Nederland racks up wins on first day, leads districts

BEAUMONT — Jace Garrett had to change his plan of attack in the middle of the boys 3,200-meter final Monday in the District 22-5A meet. But it paid off.
Garrett caught up to Jose Mendoza of Central, who had led much of the early part of the race with a sizable advantage, and won a last-lap dash to give Nederland its fourth championship of the day in boys and girls action combined.
“I didn’t expect him to go out that fast,” Garrett said of Mendoza, who took second. “We went out to a quick start, but he went out a little quicker. It definitely caught us off-guard.”
Garrett won his second straight district title in the 2-mile run, adding to his two district titles in cross country. And it helped Nederland lead the boys team standings with 78 points, six ahead of host Central.
Port Neches-Groves is third with 18, followed by Goose Creek Memorial with 16.
Nederland also leads the girls team standings with 51 points, helped greatly by Courtney Noel’s win in the triple jump. GCM is second with 42, followed by Vidor and Lumberton with 28 each and PN-G with 18.
The meet resumes Wednesday with the remaining running finals starting at 5 at Babe Zaharias Stadium. Preliminaries for the those events were held Monday.
Garrett found himself in a battle for first with Mendoza and PN-G’s Kevin Dietrich during the final four laps before coming away with the win. Dietrich came in third.
“It’s kind of the hardest thing, but it’s a rough thing to adjust to that during the race because you’re going in with your mind set on a single strategy,” Garrett said. “To come out a little different, it kind of hits you, and you have to readjust.”
Times for the 3,200 were not available.
Among Nederland’s victories Monday was its continued dominance in the boys pole vault. The Bulldogs’ sophomore trio of Alec Torres, Colton Beason and Kevon Latulas took the top three spots in that order, repeating a team feat from last season. Latulas won it in 2015, with Torres and Beason taking second and third.
“Around our area, they’ve done pretty good,” Nederland boys coach Chris Theriot said. “We took them to Houston and let them jump against bigger schools, but we expected them to do well today because of what their past has been.”
Torres and Beason both vaulted 12 feet, 6 inches, but Torres cleared on his first attempt of the height. Beason reached it on his second try.
Ty Sheppard gave Nederland a win in the triple jump, going 42 feet, 6 inches to beat Central’s Vance Vallier by 2 inches.
“Ty is a fantasic kid who comes from a great family and is a hard worker,” Theriot said. “The hard work he’s put in this year to focus on that event has paid off. He did his PR at the biggest time, and it was at district this year.”
Courtney Noel, headed to Texas Woman’s University for volleyball with twin sister Caroline, won the triple jump with a personal record of 36-6.75. She also came in third in the long jump with another PR.
“I think it was just practicing after a while, practicing my run-throughs, just getting me ready, and I really just put it all together today,” Noel said.
