PN-G ex Andrew Landry picked up his biggest PGA Tour check ($14,787) after finishing T51 last week in the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. Landry, after missing his first five cuts, has made three straight. He’ll be playing again this week in New Orleans . . . Landry, incidentally, is being backed for a
special invitation into the prestigious Colonial National Invitational May 26-29 in Fort Worth by former Beaumont PGA Tour star Bruce Lietzke. Lietzke, as a former Colonial Champion — actually he won it twice — gets to vote on who will receive a special exemption from a list of young players not otherwise eligible to play in the event. Both Landry and Lamar ex Dawie van der Walt are on the past champions list and Lietzke says he will be voting for both of them. The former Champions vote is how Jordan Spieth got to play in the Colonial as a teenager . . .
Chris Stroud, for the second consecutive week, made the 36-hole cut, then didn’t survive when the field was trimmed again after 54 holes. Stroud, after shooting 72-72 at the Valero Texas Open, slipped to a 74 on Saturday. Despite not playing on Sunday, he received the same check ($11,718) as the last player in the field. He’s teeing it up again this week in New Orleans . . .
Nederland ex Felicia Sauceda, after taking a couple of years off from competitive golf, is contributing to the Lamar University women’s team as a walk-on. Sauceda played in 11 tournaments this past season, had a stroke average of 82.3 and helped the Lady Cardinals win a fourth consecutive Southland Conference championship. She will be teeing it up for LU May 5-7 in the NCAA Regional at the Traditions Club in Bryan . . .
Two other former members of the Nederland girls team — Shelbi Vincent and Reid Whaley — had success this year for the University of Houston Victoria. Vincent, a junior, was a first team all Red River Conference selection, while Whaley was chosen Freshman of the Year. LC-M ex Brooke Brasseaux was the RRAC Player of the Year . . .
Winning team, after a huge turnout for the Knights of Columbus Estelle and Allen Fetters Foundation fundraising scramble at Babe Zaharias, was the foursome of Patrick Jones, Cody Willis, Kenny Willis and Joe Johnson. They shot 56. Closest to the pin winners were Josh LaBove (No. 2), Ronnie Plessela (No. 7), Cody Willis (No. 12) and Charles Cooksey (No. 15). Lonnie LaBove won the long drive contest on No. 3, while Wayne Graham claimed the senior long drive prize on No. 18 . . .
The team of Roddy Weatherly, Gary Tompkins, Rihard McClellan and Bob Moore scored a sweep of sorts in the Senior 50 Plus Game at Babe Zaharias. In best two ball competition, Weatherly’s foursome tied with teams captained by Rick Pritchett and Craig Fontenot on the front in minus 2, then took the back outright with minus 6 . . .
In the Super Saturday Game at The Babe, also played in a best two-ball format, the team of Craig Fontenot, Jim Jordan, Jay Thompson and Charlie Perez took the front in minus 1. The back was won in minus 4 by the foursome of Cap Hollier, Gary Fontenot, James Shipley and Paul Brown . . . The Friday Two-Ball Game at The Babe saw the team of Bill Hanley, Earl Richard, Gerald Huebel and Gene Harrison win the front in minus 2. There was a three-way tie on the back at minus 1 between teams captained by Adam Noel, Craig Fontenot ad Hanley . . .
Play for the Thursday Senior Game at The Babe was 4-person scramble. The team of Hanley, Huebel, Moore and Pat Waite won with a 60. Joe Gongora won closest to the pin on both No. 2 and No. 12 . . . There was a three-way tie in the Wednesday Zaharias DogFight. Posting 16 points were teams captained by Hanley, Noel and Hollier. Closest to the pin winners were Don MacNeil (No. 2) and Noel (No. 12).
