PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Indians welcomed the New Caney Porter Spartans into the playoffs Friday night at The Reservation.

It was the first time in school history Porter had played in a playoff, and PN-G did not even let the Spartans play a full game. Indians catcher Chase Warren drove in the final run of an 11-1 PN-G victory in six innings in the Class 5A Region III ni-district round.

Game 2 of the series is at 4:30 p.m. today at Porter High School with Game 3, if necessary, to follow.

Warren’s hit drove in Austin Bost and nearly cleared the left field fence. It would have been the second homer of the inning.

PN-G (20-6) second baseman Logan LeJeune hit his first homer of the season in the bottom of the second to give PN-G an 8-1 lead.

Bost drove in courtesy runner Trey Selman, running for pitcher Carter Henry, with a RBI single before Ryan Leckich came in to score on a passed ball to make it 10-1 Indians.

Nathan Vidrine then singled to bring up Warren who ended the game with his blast off the fence.

“This was a really big win,” Warren said. “Everyone on our team knows we can go far in the playoffs if we keep hitting and getting 11 runs with our pitching staff.”

Warren said he wished his hit had traveled just a few feet higher off the ground.

“I wanted that one to get over the fence,” Warren added. “A walkoff is a walkoff. We got the win and that is all that matters.”

Warren was on the other end of another PN-G pitching masterpiece.

Indians senior Carter Henry tore through the Porter lineup and pitched six innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Henry also hit a home run, his coming in the fifth inning to put PN-G up 6-1. Vidrine later made it 7-1 in the fifth off a RBI single by Trey Toney.

“Carter threw a good game today,” PN-G coach Scott Carter said. “He had some moments where he got shaky but he settled in and threw the ball well. I think when you put 10 hits up on the board you will have a chance to win a lot of baseball games.”

Warren had the best seat in the house to watch Henry pitch but his answer to what he saw out of the University of Houston signee was simple.

“Carter was Carter tonight,” Warren said. “He was throwing gas and nasty stuff. That is what he does. My hand was stinging a few times.”

Several pro scouts in attendance said Henry got up to 94 mph on the radar gun as late as the fifth inning.

PN-G put two runs on the board in the first inning. Cole Girouard stole home to make it 1-0 and LeJeune came home on a RBI single by Leckich.

Girouard scored again in the third on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Indians and Adam Morse put PN-G up 4-0 when he scored on a Henry RBI single.

Selman made it 5-0 when he scored on an error.
