CORPUS CHRISTI — Five combined runners qualified for the men’s and women’s 1,500-meter finals and eight total moved on when the Lamar track and field teams competed in the second day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday, hosted at Dugan Stadium at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Georgia Tuckfield and Verity Ockenden, reigning league champion, both qualified for the finals in the 1,500 meters. A racer must finish in the top four in their respective heats or in the next four best times. Tuckfield posted a 4:44.14 time, third in her heat — just like Ockenden did with her 4:45.37 mark.
Ockenden holds the best time in the league this season on a 4:17.60 from the Bryan Clay Invitational. That time is also 20th in the nation.
On the men’s side, Federico Gasbarri, Tobias Riker and Illiass Aouani finished in a clump in the prelims. Gabarri was second in his heat with a 4:03.35 time, ahead of Riker’s third place heat time of 4:03.65. Aouani took the third spot in his section on a time of 4:02.47.
Other Lamar qualifiers are: Dominique Taylor in the 100 meters, Sarah Shim in the 400 meters and Nathan Gillis in the 800. Tylen Guidry scored a point by finishing eighth in the triple jump.
