BEAUMONT – A total of 84 Lamar student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s 2016 Spring Honor Roll, the league office announced Wednesday. Fifteen of those student-athletes had a perfect 4.00 grade-point average in the spring.
To be nominated for the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, student-athletes must record a 3.0 grade-point average during the semester when their respective sport is in its championship season, and be eligible to play during that season.
The Cardinals had three conference student-athletes of the year among those on the honor roll: Michael Feucht (men’s tennis), Taylor Stockton (women’s golf) and Iliass Aouani (men’s indoor track and field). The LU baseball team led the way with 18 student-athletes on the honor roll, with two players – Will Hibbs and Travis Moore – each posting a 4.00 GPA.
The Lamar University softball team saw 12 players make the honor roll, with three players – Baylie Comeaux, Lauren Dannelley and Sarah Ragsdale – each having a 4.00 GPA.
The men’s track and field team placed 11 student-athletes on the honor roll, with two student-athletes – Stuart Ferguson and Tye Norman – having a 4.00 GPA.
The women’s track and field team saw nine student-athletes placed on the honor roll, with Jannika John and Verity Ockenden having a 4.00 GPA.
Women’s basketball and men’s golf each placed seven student-athletes on the honor roll, with each sport having one student-athlete boast of a 4.00 GPA. Kiandra Bowers of women’s basketball and Louis Bemberg of men’s golf each had a perfect semester.
The men’s tennis team and women’s golf team, each of which won Southland Conference championships this spring, had six members apiece on the honor roll. The women’s golf team saw Stockton and Olivia Le Roux post a 4.00 GPA. The women’s tennis team and men’s basketball team each put four student-athletes on the honor roll. Anna Spengler of women’s tennis and Preston Mattingly each finished the semester with a 4.00 GPA.
“The most obvious aspect of collegiate athletics is winning, but every one of our coaches will tell you that graduation is the most important goal in a student-athlete’s career,” LU Director of Athletics Jason Henderson said.
