GROVES — Andrew Landry does not want his moment in the spotlight to go to waste.

The Groves native is fresh off 15th place at the U.S. Open golf tournament two weekends ago at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. Soon after, he picked up a $10,000 sponsorship from Moonshine Sweet Tee in Austin, his hometown.

Landry acted quickly and decided to donate the money to Austyn Halter of Groves, who in August 2015 was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia.

“She’s a girl I don’t even know but she is from my hometown,” Landry recently told The Golf Channel. “I figured this was a great way to help out the community back at home in Port Neches. Just try to figure out how I could help her out and her family.”

Landry played at the St. Jude’s Classic in Memphis, Tenn., the week before the U.S. Open and was hoping to be able to pay a visit to Austyn and her family. The meeting did not happen because of scheduling conflicts.

The kindness does not stop with the $10,000 donation to the family. Landry has helped set up a gofundme.com account for anyone who would like to help the family with medical expenses.

Landry has used his connections and contacted Austin radio personality Bobby Bones to help spread the word about the gofundme.com account. The account had raised more than $11,600 as of Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s been so fun to do that off the golf course,” Landry told The Golf Channel. “Elizabeth [Landry’s wife] and I are obviously thrilled to be able to help out in some kind of way.”
