Police are working to identify a man whose body was found by a kayaker on Pleasure Island Tuesday morning.

Port Arthur Police Sgt. Scott Gaspard said the body was found floating in a containment area on North Levee Road around 8:15 a.m. and was brought to the Jefferson County Morgue in Beaumont.

“We are working to try and identify him and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” Gaspard said. “We will also check through recent missing persons reports to see if it will lead to the identity of the man and go from there.”

The recovered body appeared to have been in the water for a few days and there were no apparent signs of foul play.

On Friday a man was reported as missing and a vehicle was recovered on Saturday on Pleasure Island. Police do not know if the two cases are related.

Port Arthur Fire Department personnel recovered the body in the water about four miles down the North Levee Road, PAFD Battalion Chief Patrick Murphy said.

Game wardens with Texas Parks and Wildlife also assisted at the scene.
