BC’s Wright adds another hole in one

John Wright of Bridge City continues to get more than his fair share of holes in one. Wright sank ace No. 5 at Bayou Din on Saturday, holing his tee shot on No. 2 of the Bayou Front from 155 yards with a 7-iron. Witnesses were Bryan Boudreaux and Randy Hefley.
PN-G ex Braden Bailey is competing in another high profile amateur event this week — the 113th Trans Miss at the prestigious Olympic Club in San Francisco. Olympic Club has been host to five
U.S. Opens and two PGAs. Bailey shot a two-under 68 in Tuesday’s opening round and is in a three-way tie for third in a field of 146 players. There will be a 36-hole cut after Wednesday’s second round, then 36 more holes played on Thursday.
PN-G junior Josh Elmore shot a 36-hole total of 156 (80-78) in his first Legends Junior Tour tournament Monday and Tuesday in Houston. Elmore finished T32 in a field of 46 players in Boys 15-18 at The Club at Cinco Ranch in Houston.
The Golden Triangle Beltway Junior Tour played at Gray Plantation in Lake Charles Monday, with Robert Rigmaiden of Lake Charles winning Boys Gold with an 82. Beaumonter Cameron Barrett was a stroke back with an 83. Victor Aponte of Beaumont took Boys Silver with a 97. In girls competition, Elizabeth Townsend of Kountze shot an 83 to win the Diamond Flight while Kaylie VanderWeg of Port Neches prevailed in the Platinum Flight with a 124.
Flight winners in the Southern Texas PGA Junior Tour tourney at Henry Homberg Golf Club last week included Brendan Marley of Nederland (87 in Boys 15-18), Jack Burke of Orange (79 in Boys 13-14), Kensey Dukes of Groves (96 in Girls 15-18) and Townsend (83 in Girls 13-14).
In the Monday Senior 50 Plus 2-ball game at Babe Zaharias, the team of Larry Thompson, Benny Sharpe, Cecil Norris and Bob Moore narrowly missed a sweep. They tied the front in minus 6 and won the back with minus 4. Also posting minus 6 on the front was the foursome of Rick Pritchett, Cap Hollier, Tony Trevino and Mike Tibbets.
The team of Pritchett, Gene Jones, Troy Touchet and Rod Bennett carded minus 4 to win the front in the Friday best 2 ball game at Babe Zaharias. Minus 4 was also a winner on the back for the foursome of Chris Hahn, Don MacNeil, Ed Hetzel and Walter Colvin.
The Thursday Senior Game at The Babe was played a in 9/9 two-person format. The duo of Roddy
Weatherly-Harrell Guidry tied the team of Earl Richard-Adam Noel with a 68 in First Flight. There was also a tie in Second Flight, with the teams of Hollier-Charlie Leard and Larry Foster-Lee Bertrand posting 70s. Paul Duplantis-Jess McPhillips won Third Flight with a 72. Closest to the pin
winners were Jim Cooper (No. 2), Charlie Huckaby (No. 7), Larry Rogers (No. 12) and Bob Luttrell (No. 15).
The Babe Zaharias DogFight was played in two nine-hole competitions over the front nine. Both nines saw 19 points win. The team of Earl Richard, Hetzel, Dwayne Benoit and Larry Reese won the first
time around, with the foursome of Pritchett, Cody Metts, Paul Duplantis and Bud Aufforth finishing on top on the second nine. Closest to the pin winners were Joe Gongora (No. 2), Roy Martinez (No. 7), Richard (No. 2, second time) and Dwayne Benoit (No. 7, second time).
While most of the golf world is focused on the British Open at Royal Troon, the four PGA Tour members will Southeast Texas ties — Chris Stroud, Andrew Landry, Shawn Stefani and Dawie van der Walt — will be trying to move up the Fed Ex Cup points list in the Barbasol Championship on the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. Counting the Barbasol, only five tournaments remain for the above-mentioned quartet to get up to the top 125 in Fed Ex points. If that doesn’t happen, they will have a shot to regain their cards through the Web.com Tour Q school qualifyer.
