Report: PA’s Charles to start on PUP list

Port Arthur native Jamaal Charles had boasted much of the summer about his progress in rebounding from a torn ACL last October.

But he is not going full-blast to start preseason camp.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid told NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk on Thursday that their star running back has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. Charles, going into his ninth season from Texas, cannot take part in practices while on the list, but he can be activated to full status at any point.

Charles worked out during Chiefs minicamp last month shortly after holding a two-day camp for youths at his alma mater Memorial High. Reid, according to PFT, said that the Chiefs would evaluate Charles’ practice schedule for training camp on a day-by-day basis.

The transaction was made to prevent Charles from risking further injury. Between minicamp and training camp, Charles had released videos of him doing football drills.

The Chiefs host West Orange’s Earl Thomas and the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 13 to open the preseason. They open the regular season at home against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 11 and visit the Houston Texans the following Sunday.
