For the sixth time since 1999, golfers who played as juniors at Tyrrell Park between 1942 and 1982  will gather in Beaumont for a reunion tournament to honor the memory of the course’s long-time and beloved professional — Henry Homberg.

Called the “40 Year Junior Golfers Reunion,” it’s set for Sept. 16-18. A Friday night reception, a Saturday night dinner and separate tournaments on Saturday at Idylwild Golf Club and Sunday at Henry Homberg Golf Club (formerly Tyrrell Park Municipal) are on the schedule of events.

Heading up the event is former Beaumont PGA Tour star Bruce Lietzke, who grew up playing golf at Tyrrell Park and learning life from Homberg. Lietzke went on to win 14 PGA Tour events and six more tournaments on the Champions Tour, including the Senior U.S. Open.

Cost to a player and his spouse to participate in all aspects of the weekend is $175. Social activities only for participants and wife or guest is $85. All net proceeds benefit the Henry and Juel Homberg Endowed Scholarship Fund at Lamar University.

Lietzke will be active in the Saturday portion of the tournament at Idlywild in what is billed as a warm-up session and swing analysis from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The tournament, with a format yet to be determined, has a 1 p.m. shotgun. On Sunday, there will be a 9 a.m. shotgun at Henry Homberg Golf Club.

A buffet-style dinner is set for 7 p.m. Saturday in the Greenery Room at the Holiday Inn. The dinner will be preceded by a social hour at 6 p.m.

Hearty congratulations go out to Braden Bailey for what was arguably the finest summer of high level amateur golf ever authored by a player from Southeast Texas.

Bailey’s impressive play dating back to the latter part of Baylor’s spring season is reflected in the latest Golfweek rankings of amateur players. Nowhere in sight on the radar at this time last year, Bailey has soared to No. 38 in Golfweek’s World Rankings and No. 18 on its list of United States amateurs.

Only one Texan — Will Zalatoris of Plano (No. 6) — is ahead of Bailey in the U.S. rankings. Bailey and Zalatoris are tied with 2,250 points for Texas Amateur Player of the Year. …

Chris Stroud, as predicted in this space last week, earned the FedEx points he needed in the Travelers Championship to move into the top 125.

It was, however, a bittersweet week for the former Port Neches-Groves and Lamar star because he squandered an opportunity to move even higher than his current 123. After rounds of 70-69-66 had Stroud tied for 22nd, he made six bogeys — four on the back nine — to close with a 70 and slid 18 places to a T40. As a result, he will need to make the cuts the next two weeks at the John Deere and the Wyndham Championships, and probably finish in the top 25 or better. …

Among the three other players with area ties fighting to retain their PGA Tour card for next season, Lamar ex Shawn Stefani had the best week at the Travelers.

Stefani closed with a 65 to finish tied for 11th at 271 and jumped from 143rd to 136th in FedEx points. PN-G ex Andrew Landry dropped from 187tj to 188th after missing the cut and LU ex Dawie van der Walt backed up one spot to 174th after failing to make it to the weekend.

Both Landry and van der Walt probably need at least a top-10 to have any chance to make it to the playoffs. …

The Monday Senior 50 Plus Two-Ball Game at Babe Zaharias saw the front nine end in a tie at minus-4 between teams captained by James Shipley, Benny Sharpe, Jim Jordan and Steve Picou.

On the back, Shipley’s team that included Don MacNeil, Bob Byerly and Don Duplan won with minus-4. …

The Super Saturday Game at the Babe, played in a two-ball format, had the foursome of Craig Fontenot, Picou, Thad Borne and Robert Lynch winning the front in minus-6. The back was won in minus-4 by the team of Jordan, Bill Hanley, Harrell Guidry and Duplan. …

In the Friday two-ball at Zaharias, the team of Sharpe, Larry Johnson, Gene Hardy and Dwain Benoit took the front with minus-5. That was also the winning number on the back for Adam Noel, Raymond Darbonne, Ron Mistrot and Charles Perez. …

The Thursday Senior Game at The Babe featured a four-player combined points format. Winning with plus 30 was the foursome of Byerly, Dwayne Morvant, MacNeil and Lynch. Placing second with 22 points was the team of Adam Noel, Ronnie LaSalle, Paul Duplantis and Larry Reese. Closest to the pin winners were Rick Pritchett (No. 2), Reese (No. 7), LaSalle (No. 12) and Carl Hudman (No. 15). …

The Wednesday Babe Zaharias DogFight ended in a two-way tie at 17 points. One team consisted of Jordan, Dillard Darbonne, Duplantis and Bud Aufferth, while the other featured Lee Bertrand, Ron Mistrot, Mark McPhatter and Jess McPhillips. Closest to the pin winners were Earl Richard (No. 2), Reese (No. 7), Jordan (No. 12) and Perez (No. 12). …

Bill Avery, Mike Melancon, Leroy Falcon and David Guarnere teamed for a 10-under par 62 at Zaharias on Saturday to win the Port Neches-Groves Class of 1971 Scramble.
