CROSBY — Larry Neumann saw some good things from his Nederland Bulldogs on Thursday against Crosby, and he also saw some bad things.

The best thing about the scrimmage was the Bulldogs faced a team full of speed, exactly what Nederland will see next Friday in the regular season opener against West Orange-Stark at Dan R. Hooks Stadium.

Crosby outscored Nederland 2-0 after two live quarters with a running clock. The Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 2-1 in a controlled scrimmage before the teams went live.

Crosby and Nederland each scored once in the controlled scrimmage when the teams had their first-string offenses and defenses on the field. Crosby’s second-team offense scored its other touchdown.

“I think when we look at the video, I think we are going to be more optimistic than we are pessimistic about where we are,” Neumann said. “What we got from them is the kind of lightning speed we will for sure see next week but other times during the year. There is a learning curve when you do that. I wish we would have tackled 100 percent, but maybe at this time that is asking a little too much. We had some great hits but sometimes we didn’t wrap them up. Overall I think we did tackle.”

Tackling was one of the things Neumann asked his team to do a better job with after last week’s scrimmage against Sheldon C.E. King.

The Bulldogs did a great job of hitting in the controlled scrimmage and then let a few big plays happen in the live action.

Crosby quarterback and LSU commit Mannie Netherly had a lot to do with that.

He scored on a long run in the Cougars’ first series. The Bulldogs then had its second three-and-out of the live quarters and Netherly went back to work.

This time he handed off to running back Craig Williams who scored from 41 yards out.

Nederland could have possibly had the live action score tied but two would-be touchdown passes were dropped.

Netherly had a touchdown pass to Shammah Gray-Brooks in the controlled part of the scrimmage.

Neumann said the decision on who will be the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback heading into WOS will come soon. Both Marshall Lange and Blaysin Fernandez had reps with the first-team offense.

The Bulldogs also played Kevin LeDay at quarterback during the scrimmage. LeDay is a transfer from Port Arthur Memorial.

“We will look at the quarterback position close,” Neumann said. “We still have not had a lot of game-type situations. I feel like the management of our game we had a little confusion. We just haven’t done much of it. We will do four quarters next week though.”

Asked if he was excited about where his team is at this point, Neumann used another term to describe the Bulldogs.

“I am cautiously optimistic,” Neumann said. “This was a great scrimmage tonight and we came out healthy. We had some bright moments tonight. We have to catch the ball when we have touchdown passes. We have to get better at the fundamentals all the way around. I can’t say anything but what I said last week. We are moving in the right direction. I feel like we were better tonight than we were last week against C.E. King.”
