PORT ARTHUR – The real John Comeaux finally showed up.

After three games where the freshman from Ozen High School showed momentary sparks of genius, it was Wednesday night that he brought his full game to the court as he schooled his opponents, scoring 19 points with seven assists to lead Lamar State College Port Arthur to a 115-69 win over Lone Star College-Tomball.

“Coach (Lance Madison) told me to be more assertive, to go out and play the game I’m capable of playing,” Comeaux said. “So tonight, I did everything I could, made the most of every chance I had. I needed to take a leadership role and tonight I think I was able to do that.”

Comeaux was one of six in double figures with freshman forward Akol Deng picking up a double-double performance with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

“John’s starting to figure it out,” Coach Madison said. “He’s playing smart and valuing every possession. He has great athleticism and he has a chance to be a great player.”

Leading all scorers in the game, Comeaux flashed to the basket with a quickness that stunned Tomball’s defense. In spite of that, the Hawks struggled to get a comfortable lead early with Tomball tying the game at 15-15 with 12 minutes left in the first half.

When sophomore Keion Farrington hit a free throw, followed by a 3-pointer by Beaumont Kelly grad Cam Frank, the Seahawks finally took a lead it would not relinquish again.

“Our starters came out a little tight,” Madison said. “Our second five came in and they were actually a little more relaxed and did a good job digging in and getting us out front.”

The Seahawks led by 21 at the half then went on to pass the 100-point mark for the first time this season on a pair of free throws by freshman Madit Daniel with five minutes left in the game.

Sophomore guard Bradley Ficken scored 14 points with seven assists, Frank finished with 12 points and
four assists, while Chol Luk, Tra Grubbs and Akol Deng each added 10 points apiece for the Seahawks.

After protecting its home floor over the first four games of the 2016-17 campaign, the Seahawks hit the road for the first time, traveling to Victoria College on Friday. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Hawks have already seen the Pirates this season, topping them 99-65 on November 9.

“We’ll be in a van for four hours, playing in a hostile environment against a team that, honestly, I thought played really well here,” Madison said. “We’re going to have to go down there and play well and execute and play up to our abilities.”
