CROSBY — It’s been a long time coming, Sabine Pass coaches say, but the Sharks have made it out of the first round of the UIL softball playoffs.
Jaizee Landry struck out nine, and the Sharks posted an 8-4 victory over Somerville on Thursday in a one-game bi-district matchup. Sabine Pass (14-11) will take on Shiner in the second round, with the time, date, place and length of the playoff to be determined.
“She was clutch,” Sabine Pass assistant coach Andie Myers said. “She was in there. She kept her head in it and she finished the game for us.”
Landry helped her own cause on the offensive end. She and Lauren Price each batted 3 for 4, while Kaleigh Kingston and Erica Rodriguez each went 2 for 4 in the win.
Center fielder Gracie Hensley started a big double play in the fifth inning when she threw out a runner at the plate. Catcher Price then completed the play by gunning down the runner at second base.
The Sharks entered the playoffs as the runners-up in District 25-2A.
