The flood crept in

After days of rain and a night of torrential downpour, much of Port Arthur was drenched. However, within hours of daybreak and a relatively dry morning, most of the city was drying out.
But, in the southeast corner of the city, near Duff Drive and 10th, 9th and 8th streets, the streets were still inundated by the afternoon.
For the most part, residents seemed to take it in stride. Children played in the water while adults stared out into the new waterways from their porches or some other high area.
But, for others, the morning brought surging storm water into their homes and garages and the afternoon was spent cleaning.
One man, Jose Salomon, was sweeping debris pushed up into his garage back into the water. He said the water had gotten into his garage, but he was more or less all right.
His neighbors told a different story.
The Gonzales family, on 10th Street, woke up to a small basement area filling with water.
“We noticed it at 7 this morning,” Rafael Gonzales Jr. said. “It was going up really fast. It was scary.”
It is not yet clear how many other families in Port Arthur woke up to something similar. By press deadline, city officials still did not have estimates.
However, the Gonzales family got somewhat lucky and the water stopped at about a foot and never made it into the home proper.
Nevertheless, the water got into a refrigerator, a washer and dryer.
The family said they haven’t tried the appliances and aren’t sure whether they’re damaged or not.
Still, they said they were surprised.
In 23 years of living at the house, they said they’d never seen anything like it.
On Monday, the area got about 11 inches of rain and by noon the city had already taken another five inches.
However, with the remnants of Hurricane Harvey continuing to hang over the area — and with rainstorms predicted through the rest of the week — a flood may happen again.
So, a flood had been unimaginable by the family might happen again, for the second time this week.
