Benefit for ‘Anthony’s Fight’ set for Saturday

A benefit is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Nederland Market Basket to help a local teen battling leukemia.

Anthony Villanueva, 14, was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL Leukemia, on July 29. A Groves resident, Villanueva attends Sabine Pass School but a majority of his, and his families time, is spent at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston where he is receiving treatments.

“His sweet teachers over at Sabine Pass School have gathered donations to have him a link sale benefit this upcoming Saturday to help with expenses related to his treatment,” Vicky Villanueva said via email.

It should be easy to spot the benefit — his mom said to look for the posters and all of the black Anthony’s Fight t-shirts. There will be order forms for persons wishing to buy a shirt and proceeds from those sales will help with medical expenses while the shirt itself will show support of the teen.

Villanueva said the family travels back and forth to Houston and the majority of the time there are two different trips, one for chemotherapy and one for lab work.

“There will be times when we have to come more often during treatment,” she said. “In the next phase he goes into he will have to be admitted four different times over the course of two months for four days at a time. That will start mid November-ish so yes, Texas Children’s Hospital is practically our home away from home.”

Villanueva has chronicled her son’s journey on the Anthony’s Fight Facebook page. One of the more recent posts shows Anthony in a hospital bed resting in what was the fifth week in a row he had received a spinal tap — the last one for about a month, she said.

There are emotional posts from Villanueva telling of trying to be strong as her son goes through the side effects of chemo. The process has taken both physical and emotional tolls.

Photos show Anthony in a surgical mask, a necessary barrier against germs that could harm his now fragile immune system, dark hair framing his face. However, there is more than struggle on display. Other photos document the trip where Anthony and others met the Houston Dynamos and were able to watch the game and there was the time in late September when Sabine Pass School launched balloons in honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.
