BEAUMONT — Lamar fans will get their first look at the team favored to win the Southland Conference women’s basketball crown when the Cardinals take to the Montagne Center floor at 5 p.m. Tuesday as part of Big Red Madness.

Tuesday’s event, featuring the LU men’s and women’s basketball teams, will include giveaways, contests, free food and a DJ. Admission is free.

“It will be nice for fans to come out and watch us play,” LU women’s basketball coach Robin Harmony said. “We’d love to see a great turnout.”

The women’s scrimmage will start at 5 p.m., but the team will take the floor at 4 p.m. Prior to the scrimmage, LU’s three first-team preseason All-Southland Conference selections (Chastadie Barrs, Kiandra Bowers and Moe Kinard) will be recognized.

The scrimmage will have four 10-minute quarters and will utilize Southland Conference officials.

“It’s a good way for the players to experience a game situation,” Harmony said. “We do a good job simulating it in practice, but now they will see how officials call the game.”

The Cardinals return all five starters from last season’s squad that went 22-8 overall and 15-3 in the Southland Conference. LU returns a total of 10 letterwinners from last season and added five talented freshmen that should compete for playing time.

“We have depth this season,” Harmony said. “I think the fans will like what they see.”

Harmony was still finalizing the rosters for Tuesday, but promised the teams would be evenly matched.

“We have the talent to have two very good teams out on the floor,” Harmony said.

After the women’s scrimmage, fans will receive free food from Chick-fil-A to enjoy while waiting for the men’s scrimmage. There will be a dunk contest and a three-point contest.

The first 300 fans on hand for Big Red Madness will receive a free Cardinal Nation T-shirt courtesy of Mobiloil Credit Union. Fans will have a chance to win a 44-inch TV and a PlayStation 4.

Season tickets for the 2017-18 campaign are now on sale. To purchase tickets, or for more information, call 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets are also available at the Montagne Center ticket office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
