“Our goal has always been to provide the highest level of technology, physician care and expertise to Southeast Texans, providing the best in the health care, right in the neighborhoods of the communities we serve,” Ryan Miller, president of ambulatory services for CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Health System, said.

“As we come together… there is a lot of conversation about the importance of early detection and treatment for the best prognosis. It truly is an honor for CHRISTUS to bring 3D Mammography to the Mid County and Port Arthur communities, in an outpatient facility, to assure the women in our community have ease of access to the technology that is proven as the best for early detection of breast cancer.”

The Susie Roebuck Center houses Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography, which is the only 3D exam approved by the FDA as clinically superior to traditional mammography, according to a CHRISTUS press release. The Hologic Genius 3D Mammography has been proven to discover more invasive—or lethal—cancers than traditional mammograms.

“The advanced technology of 3D mammography has made huge leaps in early diagnosis, helping women find treatment options earlier that have significant life-saving results,” Dr. Craig DeLord, radiologist, said. “Making this technology accessible to all women is paramount to decreasing breast cancer’s morbidity rate.”

“We are so grateful to the family of Susie Roebuck who gave in memory of their mother who passed from breast cancer,” Ivy Pate, CHRISTUS Foundation Executive Director, said.

“We are also thankful to the additional community members who have generously contributed and provided the ability for the CHRISTUS (Foundation) to purchase the much-needed Hologic Genius 3D Mammography for the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Outpatient Center Mid County.”

The CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Foundation gave $450,000 for the Susie Roebuck Center.

During the unveiling Wednesday, Miller praised the initiative, calling it a positive change for everyone’s wives, daughters, sisters and aunts.

“The women of Mid County now have access to the best treatment,” he said.

Pate called it “celebrating the realization of a vision” where Mid County women could receive the highest level of care.

She especially thanked the Roebuck family present at the event, saying their mother’s memory would be honored every time a patient would receive treatment at the center.

DeLord said the ceremony was very special for him, knowing that the Roebuck family was present for such an unveiling.

“I don’t think you could honor her in any better way than this,” he said when speaking of Susie.

After the ceremony, DeLord said in his 30 years of radiology, tomosynthesis—or 3D mammography—has probably been the biggest progression in breast cancer detection.

For women with unusually dense breast tissue, DeLord said 3D mammography could better detect nodules than traditional methods.

“Never before have we taken biopsy using 3D technology,” he said. “Until now, we had to use stereotactic and ultrasound to biopsy.”

According to DeLord, tomosynthesis-guided breast biopsy is a game-changer.

“It’s like going from black-and-white TV to color TV,” he said.

In addition to being an invaluable tool for all mammography patients, Genius 3D mammography would be especially useful for women receiving a baseline screening, women with a personal history of breast cancer and those who have dense breast tissue.
