PREP ROUNDUP: Titans still in hunt for Gamble repeat

Port Arthur Memorial hosted Houston Scarborough a second time this season, and the results are similar.
Thailan Wesley had 18 points, and all 14 Memorial players who entered the game scored Friday in an 80-58 win to close up the second night of the three-night James Gamble Classic. Memorial beat Scarborough 87-58 on Nov. 18.
“It just gave us an opportunity to step up and work on other plays, work on our stuff and our craft,” said Wesley, coming off a 26-point performance in Thursday’s win over Fort Bend Ridge Point.
Memorial coach Kenneth Coleman said Scarborough has gotten much better in the weeks since the first meeting.
“I could tell when we met them the first time — they had just gotten their football players — they were tough and a quality opponent,” Coleman said.
The Titans (12-5) have won four straight, all inside their Competition Gym, and need two more wins Saturday to repeat as Gamble Classic champions. Memorial has won the tournament six times in the Classic’s 25-year history, including three in the past four years.
Standing in their way next is former District 21-6A rival North Shore, which survived Houston Madison 60-58 in the game before. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., not 24 hours since tipoff of this game.
“We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board,” said Coleman, a former North Shore assistant. “We’re familiar with each other. We’ve scrimmaged and played them already. [North Shore coach David Green] is real familiar with my kids and I’m real familiar with his kids. It should be an extremely good game.”
North Shore beat Memorial 67-49 in the Cypress-Fairbanks tournament earlier this month.
Once Memorial strung a 19-4 run going into the second quarter to expand a 15-11 lead, it was hardly a contest. Wesley had 14 points at halftime, as the Titans led 39-24.
Scarborough (13-8), a Class 4A team, did not pull within single digits the rest of the way, but Memorial found ways to keep an almost packed house interested the entire 48 minutes. Elijah Hines, Memorial’s featured running back coming off District 22-5A player-of-the-year honors, nailed two three-point baskets in the third quarter and finished with seven points.
“Seeing him shoot like that, that’s a big part,” Wesley said, seeing Hines smile as Wesley talked about him.
Wesley, for his part, threw down a two-hand alley oop from Jamyus Jones. Darion Chatman scored nine of his 11 points in the third quarter, as well.
Quentin Hudson scored a game-high 27 points to lead Scarborough.
PNG 44, Vidor 37
BRIDGE CITY — Port Neches-Groves took back the Bridge City Cardinal Classic championship.
Drake Rojas scored 17 points, leading the Indians (11-10) to a seven-point win over 22-5A rival Vidor with the help of a 15-9 fourth quarter.
PNG won the title two years ago and was defeated on a buzzer-beater against Bridge City in last year’s final. The Indians went unbeaten in this year’s Classic.
Asher Fondren scored nine points to lead the Pirates.
PNG returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Port Neches against Ozen.
PNG 48, Bridge City 34
BRIDGE CITY — The Indians held the Cardinals (6-10) to 11 points combined in the second and third quarters and got 16 points from Hunter Curtis. Drake Rojas added 13 points and Tracy Smith had 12 in the win.
Bridge City had three players each with six points.
