A man who wanted to ring in the New Year by firing a gun was arrested in Port Arthur on Dec. 31, according to information from the city of Port Arthur.

Officers were patrolling the 5000 blocks of Eighth Street around 10:58 p.m. when they heard several gunshots. They were able to pinpoint the shots were coming from a backyard in the 5000 block of Eighth Street and reportedly found a man trying to discard a handgun near the fence as officers were walking up.

Officers located more shell casings inside the yard where the man was standing. The man was arrested for unlawful carrying of weapon and disorderly conduct-discharging/display a firearm.
