The incident began around 11:30 a.m. Thursday when police responded to a major collision with multiple vehicles involved at the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and 39th Street. The driver who caused the collision had been involved in a prior incident somewhere between the 6900 block of Memorial Boulevard and the 39th Street intersection and had been shot. He succumbed to his injuries and lost consciousness behind the wheel and continued into the intersection causing a “horrific” wreck, Melvin said.

Seven people were brought to the hospital and some suffered severe injuries.

Melvin said the use of technology and good old-fashioned police work led them to the suspects.

The chief did not elaborate on a possible motive.
