Chris Stroud battled back from an ominous start in the Honda Classic on Saturday, but still wound up sliding 14 places down the leaderboard into a tie for 38th at the 54-hole mark.

Stroud, despite opening with a birdie at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, found himself three over for the day through seven holes. By managing to play the final 11 holes one under, he salvaged a two-over-par 72 that left him at 214.

With the wind down somewhat from the first two days, scores were considerably lower. Luke List shot a 66 to take a one-shot lead at 203. Justin Thomas fired a 65 for the low round of the day and is at 204. So is Webb Simpson after a 66.

Tiger Woods signed off on a 69 and is at 210.

A tee ball into the water at the par-3 fifth, leading to his first double bogey of the week, took away early momentum from Stroud. A bogey at No. 7 put his round in jeopardy, but he bounced back with a 7-foot birdie at No. 8 and made the turn in 37.

A bogey at 14 and a 4-foot birdie on the par-5, 18th left him with a 35 on the back. Though tied for 38th, he is only three shots out of 15th place heading into Sunday’s final round.
