PORT NECHES — Some rivalry games are just all-out pitching battles.

Britni Hunt scattered seven Nederland hits Friday, but she struck out 11 and used a 2-0 Port Neches-Groves lead to her advantage en route to a 2-1 victory, improving the Indians to 3-0 in District 22-5A.

The win overshadowed a 10-strikeout performance by Nederland’s Destiny Trahan.

Defense behind and in front of Hunt helped the Indians (8-9-1) on this night as well. Catcher Hannah Grumbles caught one runner stealing, and the Indians did not commit any errors.

Nederland, which was charged with two errors, tried unsuccessfully to stage a comeback in the seventh, only scoring a run.

Rachel Hammersmith went 3 for 3 with a run and stolen base. Hannah Denman hit 1 for 3, Kaitlyn Boudreaux drove in a run and Callie Jourdan scored a run. She, Hammersmith and Boudreaux each stole a base.

Hannah Goode was 2 for 3 to lead the Bulldogs (10-7-2, 1-1). Brittany Taylor, Lexi Eversole, Alyssa Collazo and Corley Pompa each had a hit as well.

PNG will visit Port Arthur Memorial at noon Monday and Lumberton at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Nederland will take on Ozen and Vidor both on the road at noon Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

 

BASEBALL

Nederland 9, LCM 2

JASPER — Landon Hiltz went 2 for 3 with an RBI double and three-RBI triple, leading Nederland (7-4-1) to a rout of Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the tournament.

Alan Underwood threw a complete game and struck out six for the win.

On Thursday, Nederland beat Kirbyville 4-1 behind Conner Kemp’s seven strikeouts and Angel Castillo’s 2-for-4 batting (two RBI), and lost 6-2 to Jasper despite 3-for-4 batting by Hiltz and 2-for-3 by Castillo (with an RBI).

At the Lufkin tournament, PNG lost to Lufkin 4-3 and Bryan Rudder 2-1 but defeated Porter 4-3.

 

TRACK

Titans 4×200 time fastest in nation

KATY — Memorial’s 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter boys relay teams raced to gold Thursday in the Katy Home of Champions Classic.

The 4×100 team won with a time of 41.41 seconds and 4×200 team turned in 1 minute, 25.94 seconds. The 4×200 time is now the fastest in the country this season for a team that set the national record in last year’s 5A state meet.

Tyvonne Allen earned bronze in the 800 meters and Xavier Hull was third as well in the long jump.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Harold Mosley Jr. came in fifth and Javontae Hopkins was sixth.

The Memorial girls team came in third in the Swedish Relay (100, 200, 300 and 400 meters).
