NEDERLAND — A well loved seafood eatery is moving from Nederland while another one is coming to town and to top that off, a well known fast food chain is in the process of breaking ground.

Sartin’s Seafood has been a staple in the city for 21 years and a part of Kim Sartin’s life for 33 years but things will soon change. April 28 is the last day Sartin’s will be open at 3520 Nederland Ave. but on May 7 the business will open at its new location at Central Mall.

“There will be a smaller service counter, the Waitr option will be available and we will try our best to accommodate our customers if they call ahead of time,” Sartin said.

The menu will mostly stay the same, just downscaled, the big family pack of three will return and the business will be open for more hours and on Sundays.

The reason for the move is personal — she is downsizing so she can have more family time, she said.

“The response we’ve had from customers is that they are all so sad,” she said. “We’re following you wherever you go, they’ve said. I feel like I need to put Kleenexes on the tables.”

Seafood lovers rejoice because Sartin’s will be just a short move away and in its place will be Judices Cajun Café.

Owner Al Judice was previously going to open a Mid-County eatery at the to-be-developed airport property but has opted to buy Sartin’s building instead.

Kay DeCuir, executive director of the Nederland Economic Development Corporation, said there are multiple phases to the airport development including:

• Phase 1- 17 acres. Judice’s was going to come in to this area.
• Phase 2 – 27 acres. Overseen by GLOW investments and will be called Golden Square. It is set to include a retail shopping center, hotel, event center, 100,000 square-foot office building, at least three restaurants and some bistro type café’s.

GLOW has until late May to opt out of the project but it is likely Jefferson County Commissioners will extend their contract.

• Phase 3 – 14.9 acres.
• Phase 4 — 28.6 acres.

But there’s more news in the fast food world with the addition of Wienerschnitzel, which specializes in hot dogs among other treats. It will be located next door to Jim Snell Master Plumber in the 3600 block of Nederland Avenue.

DeCuir said the franchise owner did not ask for or receive an incentive from the NEDC. Whataburger, which will be located across the street and adjacent to Burger King, did apply for and receive an incentive of $150,000. The incentive, DeCuir said, will be paid in two-and-a-half years through sales tax.

Both Whataburger and Wienerschnitzel are expected to open by summer.
