GROVES — Teachers and students from Art 3 at Port Neches-Groves High School were recently honored for their work to create a mural at Ridgewood Elementary School library.

LaRae Bost, Ridgewood librarian, nominated the group for the district’s Spotlight on Excellence award that was presented during Monday’s school board meeting.

High school art teacher Seida Bryan was contacted last spring to see if she was interested in getting some of her upper level art students involved in designing the mural for the elementary school library, Bost said in her nomination letter. After mulling ideas, Bryan and fellow teacher Calvin Carter went to the school and sketched the scenes on the wall and made a return trip in fall 2017.

In February 2018, teachers and students from Art 3 went over and colored the mural.

“I would like to nominate these two teachers and the students who did the work for the Spotlight on Excellence award because they definitely went above and beyond any regular job responsibilities they might have at school,” Bost said in the letter. “They instilled a sense of service and pride in their students. As a result, they made 400 elementary kids, one librarian and all the Ridgewood staff that get to enjoy our beautiful library very happy. I know they will be an example to others through this service project.”
