NEDERLAND — Business owners along Nederland Avenue shouldn’t be surprised when they get a visit from the city within the next few days.

The visit is to hand deliver the schedule of work for the upcoming Nederland Avenue Project as well as get contact information from the business owners.

Robert Woods, Nederland’s public works director, told council on Monday that the road project contract is for 180 days, which includes some added days in case of rain or other issues.

“The actual building work will begin May 14 (with work occurring) at night,” Woods said. “The communication part, the letters, will be hand delivered to Nederland Avenue businesses and we will ask them for their contact information.”

The project includes resurfacing Nederland Avenue from U.S. 69 to Twin City Highway, complete the 12^th Street drainage project and lay a waterline from 30^th Street to 20^th Street, on to 12^th Street.

In other business, council took to closed session to discuss the fate of an abandoned, unfinished store located at 2423 Nederland Ave.

In December council members agreed to give the owner, Waleed Khan, until the end of March to either fix the half-constructed building or start the demo process that was set to happen April 2. But Khan filed a temporary restraining order March 29, blocking the structure from demolition.

The cider-block structure has sat unfinished for about six years.

A decision had not been made as of 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Council also gave the green light to go out for bids for the 2018 Hot Mix Overlay Project. The proposed areas include:

• Holmes Road from Beauxart Garden Road to the end of the street.
• 14^th Street from the 500 block of Helena Avenue.
• 15^th Street from Nederland Avenue to Helena Avenue.
• South 14^th Street from Nederland Avenue to Avenue H.
• South 17^th Street from Nederland Avenue to Avenue E.
• 22^nd Street from Helena Avenue to Canal.

The city’s street improvement find is covering the cost of the project.
