Tyler Junior College and Galveston College, the No. 1 seeds from the East and South Zones of NJCAA Region XIV, came away with wins in the first day of the regional tournament hosted by Lamar State College Port Arthur on Friday.

Tyler topped Coastal Bend College 6-0 and Galveston outlasted Angelina College 5-1, while Trinity Valley Community College beat Blinn College 9-5, and Bossier Parish Community College edged San Jacinto College 4-3.

Today’s second round has Coastal Bend and Trinity Valley facing off in a 10 a.m. elimination game, while San Jacinto and Angelina play at 12:30 p.m. with the loser exiting the tournament. In the winner’s bracket, Blinn and Tyler play at 3 p.m. and Bossier Parish takes on Galveston at 5:30. The first three games of the day will be played at LSCPA’s Martin Field, while the 5:30 game is being played at the Memorial High School field.

 

Tyler 6, Coastal Bend 0

The Apaches took advantage of a 9-5 hit advantage and four CBC fielding errors to blank the Cougars and move into the second round of the winner’s bracket.

Tyler struck early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first, but then the bats went quiet until the bottom of the third when the Apaches scored three runs. They added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth.

Jaden Lance went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in to lead the Apaches at the plate, while teammate Makenzie Goswick collected two RBIs, going 1 for 4. Briana Paysinger and Mackenzie Ryan each had a double for TJC.

Abbie Dart started on the hill for the Apaches, working 5 1/3 innings, allowing three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Audrey Pickett came on in relief, going 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.

Coastal Bend was led at the plate by Jamie Morales, who finished with two of the Cougars’ five hits. Lydia Clarke went the distance on the hill, giving up five earned runs on nine hits with three walks.

 

Galveston 5, Angelina 1

A pitcher’s duel ran through 4 1/2 innings before Galveston’s offense came alive as the Whitecaps amassed 13 hits in their Day 1 win.

The story early was a perfect game on the hill by Ashley Kriesel that lasted through three innings. That no-hitter was abruptly put to an end when Angelina’s Jessica Husband crushed a home run ball to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. The Roadrunners picked up another hit in that same inning, but that would be it as Kriesel settled down and dominated the rest of the way.

Kriesel picked up her league-leading 23rd win of the season, finishing the day with six strikeouts to bring her season tally to 204.

Adriana Rincon collected a three-run home run for the Whitecaps, while Kristen Shaw, Kayla Kerr and Alyssa Martinez each doubled. Kerr finished 3 for 4 at the plate with Alexandria Lewis and Shaw finished with 2 for 4 performances for Galveston.

Angelina’s Husband and Brette Kohring each went 1 for 3 at the plate. Shelby Mixon went the distance on the hill for the Roadrunners, allowing five earned runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts.

 

Bossier Parish 4, San Jacinto 3

San Jacinto took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first but it was Bossier Parish that came on strong down the stretch to take its Day 1 win.

The Coyotes scored two runs in the opening stanza when Samantha Martinez and Lacey Gabaldon picked up back-to-back two-out RBI singles. BPCC starting pitcher Elisa Favela settled down and the offense got on track as the Cavaliers outscored the Coyotes 3-1 over the next three innings.

Favela helped her own cause, collecting two RBIs for the Cavs on a home run in the third, while Chelsea Fagan was 2 for 3 with a home run of her own. Zoe Hancock finished 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Cavs.

In the top of the fifth, San Jac scored a run to knot the game at 3-3 when Gabaldon doubled home Martinez.

Fagan’s home run in the bottom of the fifth was the difference as the Cavs held on behind Favela’s pitching. She had eight strikeouts, including a third called-strike on the final San Jacinto batter to clinch her 16th win of the season. Her eight Ks puts her at 154 for the year.

Gabaldon led San Jac at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Michelle Kristoff went the distance on the mound, striking out seven while allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

 

Blinn 9, Trinity Valley 6

In the first inning of play of the day, Trinity Valley appeared to be spoiling for an upset as the No. 3 Cardinals looked to upset the No. 2 Buccaneers.

Hannah Scullion tripled to lead off the first inning that saw Kimberly Abundis and Mele Pasikala each picking up RBIs to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.

It took until the third inning for Blinn to answer when Alivia Villarreal singled home two runs and Tori Alvarez-Lopez singled home another for a 3-2 Bucs lead. Blinn added three more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Blinn’s Abby Olejniczak went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while Villarreal and Calli Birch each finished with two hits for the Bucs. Sarah Cedillo and Georgina Gonzales each doubled for Blinn.

Abundis and Brianna Kinnard helped pace TVCC’s offense with two hits apiece.

On the mound, Meghan Morris worked the first five innings for Blinn, allowing four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Kamryn Boucher allowed hit and one unearned run in relief, striking out two and walking one in two innings on the hill.

TVCC’s Kimberly Hughes pitched fiving innings, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout and two walks. Abundis allowed two unearned runs on two hits in one inning of relief work.
