The No. 1 seeds took another step toward a championship showdown after Tyler Junior College and Galveston College won their Day 2 games in the NJCAA Region XIV Softball Tournament, hosted by Lamar State College Port Arthur this weekend.

Galveston used some late-game offense to claim a 6-4 win over Bossier Parish Community College and Tyler JC got past Blinn College with four late runs to win 5-3.

In other games Saturday, Trinity Valley Community College eliminated Coastal Bend College from the tournament with a 6-4 victory, while San Jacinto College sent Angelina College home with a 6-1 decision.

Today’s schedule has Blinn playing San Jacinto in an elimination game at 10 a.m., Bossier Parish and Trinity Valley in an elimination game at 12:30, and Tyler vs. Galveston in a battle of the No. 1s at 3 p.m. All those games will be played at Martin Field on the LSCPA campus.

The final game of the day pits the winner of the Blinn-San Jac game against the winner of the Bossier Parish-Trinity Valley game. That showdown will take place at Memorial High School.

 

Galveston 6, Bossier Parish 4

Galveston College battled Bossier Parish Community College in a game that stretched past 2 1/2 hours at Memorial High School with seventh-inning offensive heroics giving the Whitecaps a 6-4 win and a trip to the next round.

A pitcher’s duel early led to an offensive outburst in the third inning by Galveston College as Kayla Kerr doubled home two runs with another run crossing on a BPCC fielding error for the 3-0 Whitecaps lead. Bossier Parish finally answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Jayleen Lantier singled home Shelrika Bryant and Zoe Hancock.

Galveston answered immediately with a run in the top of the sixth as Rincon crossed the plate on a Caylei Allen double, giving the Whitecaps a 4-2 advantage.

The Cavaliers added two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4 with Raina McKean coming home on a Hancock bunt single. A double-steal later in the inning sent Bryant scrambling home for the tie.

Doubles by Kerr and Alyssa Martinez in the seventh inning put Galveston back on top for good as the Whitecaps scored two to take the win.

Galveston got a 3-for-4 night from Anahi Hoover, while Kirsten Shaw and Kerr each were 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Kerr had two doubles and three runs batted in.

Hancock finished the night 4 for 4 for the Cavaliers while the league’s top home run hitter, Chelsea Faan, drew four walks, three intentional.

Ashley Kriesel worked six innings on the mound for the Whitecaps, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, striking out four while walking five. Kerr worked an inning in relief, striking out one and walking one.

BPCC’s Kaitlyn Roth worked 6.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

 

Trinity Valley 6, Coastal Bend 4

Coastal Bend opened Saturday’s first elimination game with a grand slam home run but it was TVCC that came away the big winner after scoring runs in the second, third and fourth innings to send the Cougars packing.

Katharina Rangel crushed a bases-loaded home run to give Coastal Bend an early 4-0 lead but that would be the best the Cougars could do as TVCC pitcher Savanah Martinez allowed just three more hits over the next six innings.

Meanwhile, Trinity Valley’s Kimberly Abundis, who finished 2 for 2, and Ryah Kaniho each had home run balls as the Cardinals put together six runs over the middle innings. The Cards scored three in the second, then forced the tie game in the third before adding the game-winning two runs in the fourth.

Claudia Santana, who went 2 for 4, and Abundis each had doubles in the game.

Lydia Clarke went the distance on the hill for the Cougars, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. On offense, Emily Michki was 3 for 4 with a run scored and Rangel finished 2 for 4, accounting for all of the Cougars’ hits in the game.

 

San Jacinto 6, Angelina 1

San Jacinto scored early and often to take an overwhelming 5-1 lead through three innings, then added an insurance run in the seventh, keeping the Coyotes’ hopes for a national tournament berth alive.

Taylor McHenry and Lacey Gabaldon each doubled as they went 2 for 4 at the plate for San Jacinto. Samantha Martinez had two hits, as did Allison Bravo with Galveston amassing 11 hits in its win.

Rachel Adnello went 2 for 2 to lead Angelina, picking up a double along the way.

Michelle Kristoff went the distance on the hill for San Jacinto, allowing just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. Kiriany Hornberger took the loss for Angelina, giving up four earned runs on 11 hits.

 

Tyler 5, Blinn 3

In what was predominantly a pitcher’s duel early become a show offensive prowess late as Tyler scored three runs in the sixth to distance itself from a determined Blinn club.

TJC scored a run in the fourth but was matched by Blinn in the fifth for a 1-1 tie. After Tyler scored its three runs in the sixth, Blinn scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Tyler added a run in the seventh and Blinn scored another in the bottom half of the inning.

McKenzie Goswick went 3 for 4 with an RBI while Mackenzie Ryan doubled and Courtnie Heller, who was 2 for 3, homered for Tyler.

Tori Alvarez-Lopez led the Blinn offense with a home run while teammate Gabriela Gomez tripled for the Bucs.

On the hill, Abbie Dart worked four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, while Audrey Picket came on in relief to allow one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Meghan Morris went the distance for Blinn, taking the loss, as she allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
