NEDERLAND — Michael Odell Legg, who was found dead in his Beauxart Gardens Road home Wednesday, died as a result of multiple injuries due to an assault, according to Jefferson County Pct. 8 Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam III.

The results of the preliminary autopsy are pending toxicology results.

Legg’s body was discovered in his home in the 8100 block of Beauxart Gardens Road when police were responding to a call of two suspicious men in the neighborhood.

“We are waiting on a resident to get back in town for more video evidence and looking at the video recordings we have received from local businesses to see if they have anything of evidentiary value,” Nederland Assistant Police Chief Gary Porter said. “We are diligently checking out any lead and won’t leave any stone unturned.”

The area has not had any major crime issues other than a series of car burglaries earlier this year. But, Porter said, the burglaries also happened in other areas of town as well.

Leatriz Tubbs, who works at a nearby convenience store and also lives in the area, said the neighborhood used to be quiet. The store, less than a block from Legg’s home, is located outside city limits.

Tubbs said she has noticed more crime since Tropical Storm Harvey and with the addition of a trailer park nearby.

Police were initially called around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when a person in the 8000 block of Beauxart Gardens Road noted that two suspicious men had activated a doorbell alarm equipped with a video camera.

Police then found the neighboring home with the front and back doors open and Legg deceased on the living room floor.

There was no sign of forced entry to the home.

Porter said one of the men that showed up on the video camera was wearing a short rimmed crushable beach style hat, and either a flowered shirt or floral backpack and the other man was wearing a baseball cap with a bandana over his mouth. He asked for people in that area to check their security cameras for around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
