Cole Girouard drove in a run on a single and Logan LeJeune sacrificed for another, but Lamar failed to overcome an early 3-0 deficit and lost 5-3 to Stephen F. Austin on Friday in Nacogdoches.

The loss kept Lamar (15-35, 9-16 Southland) from gaining ground in the search for a top-eight conference finish, which would get the Cardinals into the Southland Conference tournament later this month. Lamar, sitting in 10th, is 1½ games behind New Orleans (21-28, 10-14) for eighth.

Girouard went 2 for 4, connecting for his one-run single in the third inning to put Lamar on the board. Former Port Neches-Groves teammate LeJeune flied out to right field to drive in a run, and Cole Coker scored on a passed ball in the seventh.
