FOOTBALL: Washington to keynote Cards’ ‘kickoff’ Aug. 26 at Montagne

The Lamar football kickoff celebration featuring former NFL running back Joe Washington Jr. as the keynote speaker will be held starting at 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at the university’s Montagne Center.

A VIP reception featuring Lamar head coach Mike Schultz, athletic director Marco Born and Washington will be held then, followed by the general admission event at 6 p.m. This is an annual fundraiser for Lamar football.

Washington, a 1972 Lincoln High graduate, won two national championships as an All-America running back at Oklahoma (1974-75) and Super Bowl 17 with the Washington Redskins in the 1982-83 season. He is a financial advisor for Wells Fargo and once fielded a NASCAR Busch Series team with basketball great Julius Erving from 1998-2000.
