GOLF: Baylor, with Bailey, earns spot in NCAA tourney

Braden Bailey shot an even par 72 Wednesday to help No. 11 Baylor finish third in the College Station regional and earn a place in the NCAA championships being played May 24-30 at Oklahoma State’s Karsten Creek course.

Bailey finished the regional over Texas A&M’s Traditions Golf Club with a 54-hole total of one over par 217. That left the Port Neches-Groves ex tied for 18th, 12 strokes behind tournament medalist Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M.

The No. 2 ranked Aggies won the team title with a 27-under-par total of 837. Clemson was second at 846. Baylor at 857, UCLA at 870 and Ole Miss at 873 rounded out the teams qualifying for the NCAA finals.

Elsewhere in NCAA regionals, the Big 12 flexed its golfing muscle.

Texas won the Raleigh regional by 17 strokes, defending NCAA champ Oklahoma prevailed by a single shot in the Norman regional, Oklahoma State won the Ohio State regional by eight strokes and Kansas clipped Stanford by one in the Stockton, California, regional.

Bottom line, Big 12 schools won four of the six 15-team regionals. Texas A&M and Florida won the other two.
