Verdine Young

Verdine Altha Jones Young, 90, a lifelong resident of Port Arthur, Texas, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Verdine was born on September 17, 1927, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Willie Jones Sr. and Fabiola Watkins Jones. A graduate of the 1945 class of Abraham Lincoln High School, Verdine earned her Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree and Master Degree (Guidance and Counseling) from Prairie View A&M University, and also studied at the University of Texas at Austin and Illinois Institute of Technology. She taught Mathematics in the Port Arthur Independent School District (PAISD) for 30 years, and spent the last years of her 36 year PAISD career as a Guidance Counselor. Verdine leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Kathleen Young Dabney (Willie), of Las Vegas and Darleen Young of Bowie, Maryland, 7 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren 4 great- great-grandchildren, first cousins, Anna M Francis, Charlie and Robert Mitchell, a special nephew Arthur Robinson (Marcia), all of Port Arthur, and a host of relatives, and friends.  Verdine was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood Lewis Young, parents, Willie and Fabiola Jones, brother, Willie Jones, Jr (Priscilla Victor), relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1:00p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with visitation from 11a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
