BEAUMONT — The Jefferson County Commissioners have honored retiring Emergency Management Coordinator Greg Fountain.

Fountain’s Jefferson County career began as a deputy sheriff and he rose to the rank of sergeant until 2007, when he became the emergency management coordinator. Fountain is set to retire in July.

“It’s been a great career working with people in this room,” Fountain said. “We’re a close-knit family here. I’ve had the opportunity to work with several wonderful sheriffs. I thank Judge (Layne) Walker for giving me this opportunity and to continuing under Judge (Jeff) Branick has been an honor.”

Branick said that it was a bittersweet day.

“When you stay up for 72 hours in (Emergency Operation Center), a couple of storms and natural disasters, you forge a bond,” Branick said.

Commissioner of Precinct 1 Eddie Arnold said that Fountain was an example of what an emergency management coordinator should be.

“I’ve known (Fountain) for many years,” Arnold said. I couldn’t think of a better person to be at the helm during some of these disasters. Everybody knows you move fast. You get things done and everybody knows that’s what you have to do in an emergency. Your motivation and diligent service is much appreciated.”

Commissioner of Precinct 2 Brent Weaver said that Fountain was always prepared.

“In the 13 years I’ve worked here, you were always ready to help those in need. You were always a phone call away,” Weaver said. “You had the contacts, the network. For that, I’m very grateful and I wish you the best.”

Branick said that he has spent a lot of time with Fountain during storms and that occasionally tempers flared.

“When you’ve been up for 72 hours straight, tempers can get a little short sometimes,” Branick said laughing. “On occasion I had to remind him who the county judge was.”

Branick presented Fountain with a certificate and a watch from the county.

“It’s not a Rolex, but it’s very close in appearance,” Branick said.

“Does it have the gift receipt?” Fountain replied.
