BASEBALL: Regional bracket finalized for Mid County

Mid County Senior Babe Ruth hopes it needs only four victories to defend the Southwest Regional championship.

The defending 16- to 18-year-old World Series champions will begin its tournament run Friday night in Fayetteville, Arkansas, against the winner of Del Rio vs. Petal, Mississippi. Those two teams will square off at 10 a.m. for the right to face Nederland-based Mid County at 8 p.m.

If Mid County loses, it will play at 4 p.m. Saturday and must win five games to advance to the World Series in Jamestown, New York, in August.

Mid County is the only team that received a bye in the seven-team, double-elimination field. Both Del Rio and Mid County were invited to the regional since an extra slot opened up, ending the need for a Texas East state championship series.

Camden, Arkansas, and Mobile, Alabama, will face off at 1 p.m., followed by Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and host Northwest Arkansas at 6 p.m. The winners of those two games will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The semifinal is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, with the finals set for 4 p.m. Monday (and, if necessary, a second game at 7).
