NEDERLAND — The bill has come due for some Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey clean-up in this city.
The City Council this week approved payments to DRC, which did some work related to debris cleanup in the wake of the storms last September.
“We had damage from (Tropical Storm) Harvey and then (Hurricane) Irma hit Florida,” City Manager Chris Duque said. “The (DRC) trucks are subcontracted and they left us for work and more money in other places. We ended up having to do it ourselves. We used our four trash trucks to become debris trucks.”
Duque said that DRC nonetheless had costs associated with the clean up.
“They were still doing work at the temporary debris site and doing the hauling for the final disposal at the Republic landfill,” he said. This is just approving payment to them so that we can submit it to FEMA.”
The city council also approved payments to Tetra Tech Inc., a company contracted to oversee the work done with debris cleanup, Duque said.
“We’re just getting that off the books to start the reimbursement process,” he said. “We did everything by the book and the way FEMA wants us to do it.”
Nederland payments to the companies will be reimbursed by FEMA at a later date.
The council also voted to approve an ad valorem tax abatement request from Phillips 66.
“They were getting abatements for some tanks,” Duque said. “It’s about $70 million in projects. That’s what the industrial agreement is there to do. It’s there to encourage more construction and create more jobs.
“Since Phillips 66 acquired the property several years ago, we’ve seen a significant increase in the value of that property. The abatements are supposed to encourage growth and Phillips 66 is coming along.”
The council gave its second approval for the $100,000 incentive for Judice’s Cajun Café, which is remodeling the former Sartin’s restaurant in Nederland Avenue. Duque said that the incentives have to be brought before the council twice to officially pass. Judice’s will open in the fall.
The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 13, where the budget will be presented to the council and may be adopted and approved in ordinance form.
