MLS: Dynamo appeal Martinez’s red card

The Houston Dynamo have launched a formal appeal of midfielder Tomas Martinez’s red card issued in the 59th minute of a 3-1 home loss to the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday.

The Dynamo went down to 10 players after Martinez was ejected following video review. With the match tied at 1-1, the referee determined Martinez had committed a serious foul that endangered the safety of the opponent, but a goal kick following a shot on target Martinez attempted was originally ruled.

The Major League Soccer Players Association supports the appeal, according to Dynamo public relations. A panel consisting of one member each from U.S. Soccer and the Canadian Soccer Association as well as an independent representative nominated by the Professional Referee Organization will oversee the review.

Should Martinez and Houston win the appeal, he will be eligible for Saturday night’s game at the Portland (Oregon) Timbers. If the appeal fails, Martinez will serve a one-match suspension.
