GOLF: Missed putts costly for Stroud in Canada

Putts that wouldn’t fall and much windier conditions for the afternoon wave combined to send Chris Stroud sliding down the leaderboard in the second round of the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario.
The Port Neches-Groves ex, after backing up an opening 65 with an ever-par 72, dropped 20 places into a tie for 23rd at 137. He’s six shots behind Kevin Tway, who shot a second-round 65, and five behind Whee Kim (65) and Keegan Bradley (63).
Though he again struck the ball well, it was a rollercoaster type round for Stroud who offset five birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey. His 13 birdies after 36 holes are tied for third most in the field.
The stats that underscore why Stroud did some backing up include 32 putts in round two, being No. 121 in the field in strokes gained putting and being T20 in putts per greens hit in regulation. The 30 greens he’s hit are tied for 10th after 36 holes.
All but one of Stroud’s birdies were of the kick-in variety. His longest made putt was 13 feet, 9 inches. The other birdies were from 3 feet, 2 feet, and two from 8 inches after he was putting for eagles.
What might have made sleep difficult for Stroud Friday night were the number of times he got the ball close and didn’t convert. He missed birdies from 14 feet, from 11-5, from 5-2, from 10-10, from 12-2, from 12-10 and from 16-11. He also missed a par putt from 6-10.
Despite the five birdies, Stroud never got to more than one-under par.
Playing the back first, he was one under after 11 holes. Then he made a mess of the par-4 third taking four shots from 76 yards away in the middle of the fairway.
Also in the Canadian Open Friday, Lamar ex Shawn Stefani shot his second consecutive 70 to make the cut on the number at 4-under-par 140.
Golf Channel coverage of the Canadian Open begins Saturday at noon. The telecast switches to CBS (KFDM-6) at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, on the Web.com Tour, both Lamar ex Dawie van der Walt and West Orange-Stark’s Michael Arnaud had good days in the Price Cutter Charity Championship. Van der Walt shot 68 for 134 and is tied for 12th at 134. He is five shots off the lead.
Arnaud posted a 66 and is tied for 25th at 135. His round included a hole-in-one on the fourth hole and an eagle 2 on the seventh hole. Overall, he had two eagles and five birdies but he also made a bogey and a double bogey.
