FOOTBALL: Bulldogs, Raiders start scripted, go live

LUMBERTON — Both Nederland and Lumberton coaching staffs got a chance to see their teams in action at Raider Stadium on Friday.
In the first half of the structured scrimmage, both teams got 40 plays each starting from their own 30-yard line. In the second half of the scrimmage, both teams played two live quarters to simulate actual game play.
“You get anxious after a couple of weeks to come out and hit somebody in a different color,” Nederland head coach Monte Barrow said. “This is good. We got a lot of young guys that don’t have a lot of experience in this type of environment. We’ll come back and evaluate the video. I’m sure we’ll find some good things that happened. As coaches, we’re always looking for what we can improve on.”
In the first half, the Bulldogs didn’t allow much on defense. In fact, Lumberton had to go through multiple possessions before getting a first down.
On the Bulldogs’ first offensive series, they were seemed to pick up where they left off last year by running the ball and using the play action to take some shots deep and get junior quarter back Blaysin Fernandez on the run.
Nederland sophomore running back Josh Mazyck was able to show of some speed and strength after running through four defenders on a 40-yard run on what might have been the play of the night. A couple of plays later, he showed a knack for staying upright after leaping through the line of scrimmage and being hit hard by two Raiders and keeping his feet under him and fighting for 5 more yards.
Neither team got into the end zone in the first portion of the scrimmage.
Score was not kept in either portion of the scrimmage, but the Bulldogs found the end zone twice and kept Lumberton from scoring.
The second half of the scrimmage mimicked a real game with two 12-minute quarters and a running clock that only stopped for injuries, timeouts and scores.
The Bulldogs capped off a nine-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run by Cade Scott with 5:55 left in the first of the two quarters.
The Nederland defense was opportunistic on the following drive, recovering and errant pitch by Lumberton’s quarterback on the Bulldogs 28. The Bulldogs capitalized by capping off the 72-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown Fernandez touchdown pass.
Toward the end of the game, a scuffle broke out near the Lumberton sideline that led to offsetting penalties for both teams. Barrow said that it was a teaching moment for his team about self control.
“They see it on TV,” Barrow said. “It happens at practice. We try to coach it and show that there will be consequences of throwing a punch or running onto the field. We let them know that they are letting their team down because they will be thrown out of the game. One of our biggest things is to control what we can control. That’s something we can control.”
Nederland’s first game of the season is at West Orange-Stark on Aug. 31 at Dan R. Hooks Stadium.
