BEAUMONT — Lamar University held a short scrimmage during an open scrimmage Thursday evening at the Montagne Center.
The practice was open to the public, and fans were treated to a dunk contest and a men’s three-point shooting contest prior to the scrimmage. At halftime, the LU women’s basketball team was introduced to the crowd, and the women’s team held their three-point contest.
The LU men split the squad into two teams – LU Black and LU White. The White team recorded a 10-point victory, 38-28, in the 16-minute (two 8-minute halves) contest. The White team consisted of Christian Barrett, Jordan Foster, Jordan Hunter, Nick Garth, V.J. Holmes and Avery Sullivan, while the Black squad consisted of Josh Nzeakor, T.J. The LU White squad pushed their lead to as many as seven points in the first half before taking a six-point advantage into the locker room.
After the White team built an eight-point advantage following two Barrett free throws to start the half, the Black team began chipping away at the deficit making it a one-possession game with 6:55 remaining but that would be as close as they would get. The Cardinals open the regular-season Thursday when the host Huston-Tillotson. The game against the Huston-Tillotson will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
