COLLEGE STATION — In sixth place through the first 2,000-meters and third place through 6,300-meters, Lamar’s Jamie Crowe ran the race of life Friday to win the NCAA South Central Regional individual title.
The senior from Glasgow, Scotland, is the first Cardinal to ever win an NCAA Regional race, and the first Southland Conference runner to compete at the NCAA Championships since 2015.
“This was a great performance for Jamie,” said cross country coach Tony Houchin. “We have had a lot of great athletes come through this program and Jamie is our first ever regional champion. And to have Jordan finish in the top seven and be in the conversation for qualifying to the nationals is big for the program.”
Crowe became the 19th Cardinal to qualify for the NCAA Championships and the sixth in the past six years after running a time of 31:36.3. He reached the first split in 6:15.4, trailing runners from Arkansas, UTRGV, North Texas, Rice, and Texas A&M. Crowe began to make his move by the 6.3k split, reaching that mark in third place with a time of 19:49.8. He completed his incredible race in 31:36.3, one of the best performances at the Texas A&M cross country course by any Southland runner in the last decade.
Crowe wasn’t the only Cardinal with an impressive day. Southland Newcomer of the Year Jordan Rowe was 15th through the first 2,000 meters of the race, then moved up nine places into sixth by the 6.3k mark. He managed to stay within the top 10 by the end of the race, finishing seventh with a time of 31:49.1. Rowe’s finish qualifies him for the All-South Central Regional team and keeps him in conversation for the NCAA Championships. The top two teams from each regional and the top four individuals from each regional not on those teams qualifies for the NCAA Championships, taking place at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Matthew Arnold (57th, 33:36.1), Kyle Garcia (82nd, 34:11.7), James Stockings (106th, 34:56.3), and Nejc Ferle (DNF) also competed at the NCAA South Central Regional for the men.
Katie Buckley had the best Big Red finish for the women with a time of 21:54.6 in the 6k race. Sophie Wood took 69th with a time of 22:43.8, Julie Emerson captured 83rd with a race of 22:56.0, and Katy Whiteoak finished 87th with a mark of 23:00.1. Mollie Williams (129th, 24:23.6) and Sarah Foster (150th, 26:03.9) rounded out the Cardinal docket.
