Tekoa Academy went on a 10-0 run to start the championship game of the Faith Christian Basketball Tournament in Pasadena and marched to an 80-56 winner over Grace Academy on Saturday.
Tekoa won three games in the tournament, opening with wins over Yes Prep 107-18 and Faith Christian 73-39. In the title game, Tekoa relied on pressure defense leading to easy baskets and built a 42-23 halftime lead.
“Our team defense played with a chip on their shoulder and created that lead to easy baskets the entire tournament,” Tekoa coach Melvin Sostand said. “Going into the tournament, we didn’t know what to expect but all week leading up, we focused on pressure defense.”
Seniors Lesley Harmanson and Robert Scott each averaged double-double points and rebounds for the tournament, but Sostand said the guard play of freshman Jailan Ardoin and senior Kevin Laday kept the Cougars in games.
Tekoa will take on Lighthouse on Thursday at 2920 Lake Arthur Dr.
