WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Kansas State separates from Lamar for 73-55 win

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Chastadie Barrs recorded her second double-double of the season but it was not enough on Wednesday evening as Lamar was defeated by Kansas State, 73-55. The loss drops the Cards to 5-4 on the season.

Barrs scored 17 points and collected a team-high 10 rebounds as she picked up her second double-double of the season. Miya Crump led the Cards with 19 points. LU struggled shooting from the outside as they shot 3-for-20 on three-pointers.

In the first quarter, the Cards and Wildcats went back and forth. After each basket for the Cards, the Wildcats answered. A layup by Crump put the Cards ahead by 2, 6-4. Kansas State answered with a three taking a one-point lead. Kinard hit a three giving LU a lead of 9-7. The lead exchanged hands five more times in the quarter and LU led 15-14 after one quarter of play.

LU grew its lead to five points, 21-16, in the first minute and half of the quarter after a pair of free throws by Rikiah Cowart. Just over a minute later, the lead was up to seven, after a Barrs layup. Lamar held the Wildcats to 1-for-7 shooting opening the second quarter. The Wildcats started heating up midway through the quarter and tied the game at 23-23 after an old fashion three-point play. LU led until late in the quarter when the Wildcats scored the final six points. LU trailed 33-29 at halftime.

The Cards offense went cold in the third quarter as they shot 4-for-16 from the floor. Barrs hit a layup opening the quarter trimming the lead down to two, 33-31. Following the layup, Kansas State grew its lead to nine, 41-32, after a free throw by Rachel Ranke.

Lamar answered with a 6-0 run trimming the lead down to three, 41-38, after a Jadyn Pimentel layup. However, the Cards went scoreless for the final five minutes of the quarter and Kansas State grew its lead to 18, 56-38, after three quarters of play.

Kansas State stretched its lead to 22 points early in the fourth quarter. Angel Hastings hit a three pointer, that put the Cards down 19, 62-43. Following the three, LU got the lead down to 15, 64-49, after a three-point play by Cowart. LU got within 14 points put it was not enough as they were defeated 73-55.

LU returns to action on Monday when it hosts Howard Payne University. Tipoff is set for noon.
