BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lofton’s 24 points, 18 rebounds carry Titans

Kenneth Lofton Jr. took control of the glass Thursday, and Memorial took its fifth straight victory.
Lofton’s 24 points and 18 rebounds gave the Titans a lift in a 55-48 victory over the Arlington Bowie Volunteers in the Cypress-Fairbanks tournament. Memorial (8-4), like many Southeast Texas teams, is playing in its second tournament in as many weeks, with its winning streak dating back to the Carlisle-Krueger Classic in the Clear Creek ISD.
Steven Wilson had 11 and Kenneth Washington added nine for the Titans, who will take on Spring at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Berry Center.
PNG 54, Shepherd 33
In Sour Lake, Port Neches-Groves is enduring the (Hardin-Jefferson Basketball) Marathon quite well.
Tracy Smith followed up a 29-point effort in an overtime win over Cleveland with 19 points in a win over Shepherd that became decisive with a 24-4 fourth quarter. The Indians led 16-13 at halftime.
Trent Lee added 15 for the Indians (7-3), who have won three in a row.
Now, the Indians’ run in the Marathon will continue with an 8:30 a.m. game against Tatum. It’ll be their only game of the day.
PNG 63, Cleveland 57, OT
Earlier Thursday, Smith went for 29 points, and PNG won in overtime for the second time in the past four games.
PNG outscored Cleveland 8-3 in the extra 4 minutes and got help from Jackson Simmons’ 12 points.
Chance Brown led Cleveland with 25 points. Jevarrick Butler added 14 and A.J. Wheeler had 10 points in the loss.
Cleveland and PNG will be foes in District 21-5A.

Also Thursday: Nederland lost to Spring Hill 60-42 despite Hayden Hefner’s 30 points and beat Little Cypress-Mauriceville 61-54 (Hefner scored 28) at the H-J Marathon.
GIRLS
PNG 44, Elysian Fields 37
At the Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro, Chelsea Carrillo’s 15 points and 10 rebounds powered the Indians (9-3) to victory.
PNG had to withstand a late rally by Elysian Fields to take the win. The Indians were ahead 40-23 after the third quarter.
Mollee Priddy added 14 pionts and four assists, and Maylin Stampley had eight for PNG. Sammy Spears led Elysian Fields with 19.
High Island 65, Sabine Pass 32
In High Island, the Cardinals beat the Sharks for the second time in three days.
This time, it was a little more decisive.
Jaizee Landry scored 11 points to lead Sabine Pass.
