Believe it — Port Neches-Groves is 2-0 in District 21-5A girls basketball.

Thank Maylin Stampley and Chelsea Carrillo in large part for that.

Stampley sank 26 points and Carrillo came up with a double-double at home Tuesday night, and the Indians remain in first place with a 51-46 decision over Dayton.

Just as solid as Stampley’s scoring was her defense. The junior had five steals.

“Aggressive defense set the tone early,” Indians coach Kara Skinner said. “We did a good job attacking the basket on offense. Pressure from the press disrupted Dayton’s offense. Great win for our program.”

PNG (11-6, 2-0 in 21-5A) now goes into Friday’s rivalry game at home against Nederland with a chance to start 3-0 in district.

Carrillo’s 10 points and 10 rebounds mark her second double-double in a row. Mollee Priddy scored eight points and five rebounds, and Holly Jones had five points.

Raven Maness led Dayton (7-11, 1-2) with 15 points. Brittany Sias and Raylin Jenkins each had 11.

 

Barbers Hill 47, Memorial 40

In Port Arthur, Julia Sion’s 13 points and 17 rebounds were not enough for the Titans (4-8, 1-1 in 21-5A) to knock off the Eagles (7-9, 2-0), who were unbeaten in district play last season.

Sion shot 6 for 11 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds off the offensive glass. Dakayla Miller added eight points for Memorial.

 

Silsbee 59, Bridge City 41

In Bridge City, Silsbee outscored the Cardinals 22-10 to put away a District 22-4A tilt.

Madison Fischer had 14 points for the Cards (14-5, 1-1).

 

BOYS

PNG 66, Dayton 40

In Dayton, PNG (9-7, 1-0 in 21-5A) earned its second straight victory getting double-digit scoring from three players.

Trent Lee had a game-high 19 points, Tracy Smith scored 14 and Drake Rojas had 13 for the Indians, who were ahead 26-17 at halftime. Noah Santos led Dayton (4-14, 0-1).

Next for PNG is a rivalry game at Nederland on Friday.

Also Tuesday: Nederland beat Vidor 53-43, and Silsbee beat Bridge City 92-52.
