MEN’S BASKETBALL: Garth scores career high as Cards beat Tigers

Texas Southern has beaten Baylor and Oregon on the road this season, and Lamar was ready for the Tigers.
Nick Garth scored a career-high 36 points, leading the Cardinals to an 80-72 victory Wednesday night at the Montagne Center in Beaumont.
Garth shot 11 of 17 from the floor and made 8 of 9 three-point shots. The fourth-year Cardinal guard also made 6 of 6 from the free-throw line and had three assists and two steals.
The Cardinals (5-6) avoided a third straight defeat, following back-to-back losses to the University of Houston and Cal State Bakersfield.
The Tigers (4-7) led by as many as seven points with 10:49 left in the first quarter, but finished the first half shooting 35.3 percent from the field. Lamar made 46.7 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and stayed steady on offense throughout the game, going 28 for 64 for the game (43.8 percent).
Josh Nzeakor was the other Lamar player to shoot better than 50 percent from the field, making 7 of 13 and totaling 19 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Hunter came off the bench to score 17 points.
Jalyn Patterson led Texas Southern with 21 points, Trayvon Reed added 15, Eden Ewing had 12 and Jeremy Combs scored 10. Ewing also totaled 11 rebounds.
The Tigers shot 26 for 61 from the floor for 42.6 percent.
Lamar led 41-32 at halftime.
The Cardinals will play again at home Friday night against Howard Payne and take their Christmas break before returning to host Champion Christian on Dec. 29.
