FRISCO – Junior forward Christian Barrett has been named Southland Conference Player of the Week for his part in leading Lamar to consecutive road wins over Nicholls State and McNeese State last week. It marks the first time that Barrett has received the honor, and the second time this season that a Cardinal has receive the award.
Barrett averaged a double-double in the team’s two wins as the Cardinals moved into eighth place in the Southland standings. Prior to the start of the week, LU had recorded just one road win on the season (at Rice in December). Barrett averaged 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds while shooting 13-of-19 (.684) from the field. Barrett was also a near perfect from the free throw line knocking down 8-of-9 (.889) attempts for the week.
Barrett played 30 minutes at Nicholls and scored 17 points on 6-of-8 (.750) shooting. He was also a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line while tying a career-high with 12 rebounds. Barrett followed up that performance with a 17-point, 10-rebound outing Saturday in the victory over rival McNeese. Barrett was 7-of-11 (.636) from the field against the Cowboys and knocked down three of his four free throw attempts. He also dished out three assists in the two games.
Barrett led a charge for the Cardinals at the free throw line. The Red and White were a combined 42-of-47 (.894) from the free throw line during that stretch.
Big Red will be back in action Wednesday when they return home to host Abilene Christian. The game against the Wildcats will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
