PREP ROUNDUP: Bulldogs secure 21-5A championship

Nederland did not let another opportunity to win a District 21-5A championship slip.

This time, the Bulldogs have the championship all to themselves.

Destin Miguez, Meg Sheppard and Phoebe Short each scored twice as the Bulldogs secured the No. 1 seed in 21-5A with an 8-1 win over Cleveland on Friday. Skylar Thomassie and Hanna Foster had the other goals.

The win gives Nederland (18-1-3, 10-0-1 in 21-5A) 31 district points, making it impossible for second-place Vidor to catch up. The Bulldogs’ last regular-season match is March 19 at Dayton.

 

PNG 3, Memorial 0

In Port Neches, Ariel Muller made two assists and was one of three goal scorers as the Indians (14-3-7, 7-2-1 in 21-5A, 23 points) shut out the Lady Titans (7-12-1, 3-7-0).

Breeana Riggs and Kassandra Brown also connected on goals for the Indians. Riggs finished with an assist.

PNG will finish the district slate at Barbers Hill on March 19.

 

BASEBALL

Nederland 7, Carthage 7

In the Jasper tournament Saturday, Brock Holton homered and Kam Grant drove in three runs, but the Mid-County black-and-gold Bulldogs (4-7-2) had to settle for a tie a day after dropping an 8-2 decision to east Texas’ red-and-white Bulldogs.

Samuel Wille went 1 for 2 and Landon Hiltz threw five strikeouts in two innings pitched.

 

Nederland 7, Bridge City 4

In the Jasper tournament Friday, Kamden Grant smashed a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and Nederland (4-7-1) gained more than enough insurance to take a 7-4 win over Bridge City in five innings.

Grant went 2 for 2 and scored two runs. Recent Carl Albert State College signee Brian Davila batted 2 for 3 with a run score.

Landon Hiltz, Rene Cunningham, Omar Mascorro and Corbin Chandler each lined a hit. Hiltz scored two runs as well.

Conner Kemp struck out seven and allowed four earned runs on four hits in five innings for the win.

Kade Benoit (two RBI), Slade Foreman, Logan Hamm and Sam Carpenter each had a hit for the Cardinals (9-4-2). Four pitchers were used in the loss.

 

Carthage 8, Nederland 2

Earlier Friday in Jasper, the Carthage Bulldogs broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth before the game ended on a time limit.

Wade Butler batted 2 for 2, and Dylan Romero, Brock Holton (RBI), Davila and Hiltz (RBI) each pounded a hit for Nederland’s Bulldogs. Four pitchers took the mound for Nederland.

 

PNG 8, Bryan Rudder 0

In the Lufkin tournament, the Indians posted seven runs in the second inning, and Khristian Curtis struck out six in throwing a five-inning, two-hit shutout.

Dean Guidry hit 2 for 3 with a double and scored two runs for the Indians (5-8-1), who have won three straight. Curtis (two RBI), Blake Bost, Ryan Sosa, Keaton Richard (double) and Cade Billeaud each had a hit and at least one RBI.

Austin Stevens and Brandt Roberts had the only Rudder hits.

 

PNG 9, Nacogdoches 5

In Lufkin, Curtis and Sosa each drove in three runs, Carson Roccaforte batted in two, and the Indians started Friday with a win over the Dragons.

Reid Porter batted 3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored, leading PNG at the plate. Sosa had two hits, and Reece Mancera, Keaton Richard, Roccafore, Bost and Curtis lined one.

Austin Schaper worked five innings and struck out two for the win. Hunter Hranicky and Roccaforte combined for two hitless innings.

 

SOFTBALL

Nederland 7, Vidor 0

In Nederland, Destini Trahan struck out 17 and held the Pirates to three hits in a shutout win to open District 21-5A play.

Brittany Taylor drove in two runs, batting 3 for 4 for the Bulldogs (12-11, 2-1 in 21-5A). Allison Sorensen and Trahan were each 2 for 3, while Hannah Grumbles, Harlee Brown, Sierra Wiltz and Tori Morrison each sent a double.

Nederland will visit PNG at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

 

PNG 4, Dayton 3, 8 inn.

In Port Neches, a run in the eighth inning gave the Indians a one-run win.

Bayja Newby batted 3 for 4 and stole a base for PNG (13-4, 2-0 in 21-5A). Maylin Louvier, Cameron Niedenthal and Sadie Shrestha each pounded two hits, with Niedenthal earning a double and driving in two runs.

Niedenthal also struck out nine in the win.
